We are overwhelmed with the interest in Iyengar Yoga Detroit Collective’s Apprenticeship Program. This indicates that many people are drawn to the sacred art, science, and philosophy of Iyengar Yoga, and interested in the challenging, multi-year task of becoming a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT), if provided adequate support. This realization is incredibly heartening and gratifying.
Our 2020 BIPOC Paid Apprentice Program is full. We are sorry we cannot welcome all who have expressed interest.
Unpaid Apprenticeship positions are available. If you are not BIPOC, or you do not seek a paid position, you can apply here.
Applications for BIPOC Paid Apprenticeships for the 2021 cohort will be due December 1, 2020. 2021 applicants should be students of Iyengar Yoga with at least 1 year of current, ongoing Iyengar Yoga study.
If you’ve only recently inquired about the program, you have several good options before you:
If you are not yet a student at IYDC, we urge you to join us in class. We have a wide array of classes and levels, including $5 and up Community Gift classes. Brand new to IYDC? Buy the $30/5-class/5-week pass.
If you are already an Iyengar Yoga student, start coming to any of the Intermediate level classes. During the Covid19 closure, we are meeting online Thursdays, 9-10:30am (Black and Brown Intermediate for BIPOC), and Saturdays, 9-11am. This will prepare you for the 2021 Apprenticeship Program. Intermediate students are also welcome to join the monthly philosophy study group on the final Thursday of each month from 7-8:30pm. Intermediate level Iyengar Yoga students can also enroll in Art, Science, and Philosophy of Iyengar Yoga teacher training weekends, which meets 4 times/year. Remaining 2020 dates are October 2-4, and December 4-6.
Attend our monthly Yoga Philosophy Study Group (Community Gift) 3rd Sunday of the month, 1:30-3pm. We are currently reading TREE OF YOGA. Email us for details.
Attend our various workshops on special topics. Most workshops require at least 3 months of Iyengar Yoga study and include sliding scale registration.
If you are BIPOC, you are eligible for a needs-based 20-50% discount on classes, workshops, and teacher trainings. Apply here.
If you are not BIPOC and need a discount, apply for work-study after you’ve been attending classes for at least 1 month, to receive a 50% discount on classes. Pay $65 for 12 classes in exchange for 6 hours of work (30 minutes/week). Apply here.
The very heart of Iyengar Yoga teaching is a grounded, consistent, earnest home practice, supplemented by a steady relationship with trusted teachers. Nothing, including teaching, is more noble than being a practitioner. We support each other in beloved community to help one another develop and grow on the path as practitioners. Please make this your highest endeavor, whether or not you are an apprentice.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

BIPOC PAID APPRENTICE PROGRAM IYDC hires 3-5 BIPOC paid apprentices to participate in a 2-3 year training, leading to supervised teaching, and hopefully certification. We began this program in January 2020. Apprentices should have at least 1 year of recent and consistent Iyengar Yoga study with a CIYT (Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher).
We encourage highly motivated Iyengar Yoga students with less than 1 year of recent and consistent Iyengar Yoga study to apply and be considered for thePre-Apprentice Program.
As a Yoga Equity Fund project, we seek apprentices who live in Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park, MI. We especially seek BIPOC applicants, applicants who identify as LGBTQIA, and applicants from other marginalized groups, who may need support to pursue the path of Iyengar Yoga teaching. The PAID positions are not intended for those who are not from marginalized groups, who already have the capacity to pay for classes, workshops, and trainings. However, all are free to apply as UNPAID apprentices.
This program attempts to remove some of the barriers many people from marginalized groups experience when trying to immerse themselves in the life path of Iyengar Yoga. We recognize the tremendous commitment of time and energy it requires to become a teacher of Iyengar Yoga. We also emphasize that learning to teach Iyengar Yoga cannot be accomplished in a single year, nor in 200-500 hours, but that it needs to be preceded by a steady, consistent study and practice, and developed over years, through mentorship, relationship, peer support, and community. We recognize that it is not actually possible to place a dollar value on these requirements. This program is an attempt to make the path of Iyengar Yoga teaching concrete and viable, for both the apprentices and IYDC.
Apprentices will apply online, and those applying for the paid positions will be interviewed by the IYDC Owners’ Circle.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The length of each term will be individually determined based on apprentices’ prior experience, progress of study, time and energy available, and personal life circumstances.
